Q & A
What tests screen for gynecologic cancer?
Cervical cancer used to be the number one cause of gynecologic death in women, but cancer screening tests have significantly improved this statistic. The two most common tests Dr. Kellogg offers to screen for cervical cancer include the Pap test and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test.
The Pap test checks cells from your cervix for abnormalities. During your pelvic exam, Dr. Kellogg may scrape cells from the cervix and have them sent out for an evaluation. You should start your Pap tests at age 21 and then get tested every three years.
HPV testing begins at age 30, or earlier if your Pap test results came back abnormal. Like the Pap test, Dr. Kellogg takes cells from your cervix, which are sent out for evaluation and testing. If the test is negative, you won’t need another Pap or HPV test for five years.
If either the Pap test or HPV test is positive, additional testing or procedures may be necessary, such as colposcopy or biopsy.
What is HPV?
HPV is a common virus spread through sexual contact. There are several different strains of the virus, including some that cause genital warts and some that increase your risk of cervical cancer. The HPV test specifically checks for strains of the virus linked to cervical cancer.
What is vaginal rejuvenation?
Vaginal rejuvenation is treatment aimed at improving the health of your vagina to reduce discomfort and improve pleasure. Childbirth and hormonal changes associated with menopause may affect the health of your vagina, causing laxity, dryness, or decreased sensation.
To help women regain their sexual health, Dr. Kellogg offers laser treatment with MonaLisa Touch®, which improves vaginal health by stimulating the production of collagen, blood vessels, and nerves to improve strength, flexibility, circulation, and sensation in your vaginal walls.
What are bioidentical hormones?
Bioidentical hormones are a natural form of hormone replacement therapy that helps reduce symptoms associated with menopause, including hot flashes and vaginal dryness. If you’re experiencing these symptoms and it’s affecting your intimate relationship, Dr. Kellogg may recommend these natural hormones to help improve your symptoms and bring the fireworks back to the bedroom.
